Grade 5/6

March 13, 2020

This week we were able to do our work AND listen to some beautiful piano playing by a student.  This was in relation to students being able to show their talents in music class as a way of becoming more of a music community.  Perhaps some students will learn more about their classmates.  Possibly they could play instruments together, we will see!

Students that presented this week showed us Jazz and Country.

January 31, 2020

Students have been continuing to present.  We have seen hiphop, folktale, electronica, and other genres.

January 24, 2020

The students have been presenting their genre projects.  This will take a few music classes.  We are also going to start a new way of sharing our talents in music.  Once a month a few students will share a special musical talent with their class.  It can be performed in class, bring in a recording, send a video, or something else.  If your child suggested bringing in or sending a recording, I will be emailing parents soon about it.  I am very excited to get to observe the many talents of Ramsay students!

January 17, 2020

This week students finished up their genre projects.  Tuesday we will begin watching the presentations.  I am sure that students will learn a lot about genres they may never had considered listening to.  Please remember to send in your child's permission form for choir.  Choir starts on Wednesday.

January 13, 2020

This week student groups will be putting the final touches on their projects so that we may begin presenting on Friday.  There are many genres students will learn about such as; hiphop, reggae, jazz, country, disco, pop, funk, electronic dance, and folk music.  Ask your child what genre they have been researching!

CHOIR starts next week.  Please have the student permission forms back to teachers by Friday, January 17th.  Thank you.  I am looking forward to singing with your child!

Happy New Year!

We will be finishing our genre projects up in the first two weeks of school.  Then we get to present.

December 12, 2019

This week students continued working on their genre project.  Here are some of the questions they must answer:

1    How did your genre start or evolve over time.
2    Who are some of the people who were important in creating the genre.
3    A CLEAN example (insert link from youtube or bring in a recording) from your genre.
4    What do you like best about your genre.
5    Any predictions you have about how your genre might change in the future based on how it began or changed up until now.

6    Any other information you wish to share!

December 5, 2019

In music, students had computers so that they may research their favorite genre.  Students are working in groups and are researching the history of their genre, who are the main people who made it happen and a clean example of that genre.  Ask your child what genre they are researching!

This week students were practicing their rhythms with rhythm cards.  Also we are continuing to practice our ability to keep the rhythms with tennis balls and know the section changes to change the particular movements we do in the song, "In the Hall of the Mountain King."

November 15, 2019

This week we started the song 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' using tennis balls and movement to show the changes of speed and sections of the song.

October 24, 2019

This week in music students were learning the Caribbean Folk song 'Four White Horses.'  In one interpretation this song is described as about four white horses travelling on a barge or in a boat on a river.  It is going to rain the next day, so they are told that they better come back up river to where it is safe in the shallow bay.

Students were practicing rhythm and their singing in this song.  The rhythm is in keeping the beat with the clapping game in groups of four.

Ms. Courtney
